Line of Events
The city of New Rome is in the midst of a duel between Cesar Catilina, a brilliant artist who envisions a utopian future, and the money-hungry mayor, Franklyn Cicero. Between them is Julia Cicero, whose loyalties are torn between her father and her lover. Francis Ford Coppola wrote the screenplay in the early 1980s, but the film was shelved in part due to his financial debts. Pre-production finally began in 2001, after 30 hours of second-unit footage had been shot and auditioned for, with Paul Newman, Uma Thurman, Robert De Niro, James Gandolfini, Nicolas Cage, Leonardo DiCaprio, Russell Crowe, Edie Falco, and Kevin Spacey, but the project was shelved after the September 11 attacks because a scene in the script (p. Coppola abandoned the project altogether in 2007, and did not resume development until 2019. At 21:40, the character of Catiline says in amazement: “Holy Jesus Christ!” But in this universe, the city of New Rome is derived from a culture based on Roman mythology (example: 54:47, dedication to Vesta; 01:55:51, someone says “The Testament of Kronos” or 01:56 :49 the statue of Saturn is clearly visible, while many other Roman deities are also visible. Christianity does not exist in this universe. There is no reason for Catiline to use the phrase “Holy Jesus Christ!” in such a context. Cesar Catilina: You want to help me?
Julia Cicero: Yes
And I… well, I want to study. Cesar Catilina: And you think one year of… medical school gives you the right to dig through the riches of my Emersonian mind? Julia Cicero: Does it give you the right to? Cesar Catilina: Yes. Julia Cicero: [mockingly] Do you have the right to do that? Cesar Catilina: Yes! Julia Cicero: Do you have the right to do that?
Cesar Catilina: YEEEEEEESSSSSS!
Julia Cicero: You have no idea about me! You think I’m nothing but a society lady? Cesar Catilina: No, I’m nothing, but I reserve my time for people who can think. About science. And literature and… architecture and art. Do you find me cruel, selfish and insensitive? I am. I work in a way that I don’t care what happens to any of us.

I so desperately wanted to be part of the minority that enjoyed Megalopolis. But what a terrible nightmare; or perhaps a fever dream would be more accurate. There’s no doubt that the package of ideas that make up Francis Ford Coppola’s masterpiece is incredibly unique and interesting.
The problem is the execution of those ideas and the dialogue that ties them together
I’m obsessed with the idea of New Rome and these quasi-Roman characters plotting against each other like Shakespeare in Game of Thrones. But listening to Adam Driver quote a line from Hamlet and then immediately say “in the clurrrr” and Jon Voigt say “boner” is simply unforgivable. I understand the plot of Megalopolis in general, but I also don’t understand why any character does or says what they say. The amount of talent wasted on one of the most beautiful, visually stunning sets is irreverently shocking. Still, I’ll probably subject myself to another viewing of Megalopolis to make sure the experience was as exhausting as it was.
