It follows Madeleine Matlock as she joins the workforce at a prestigious law firm, where she uses her cunning tactics to win cases and uncover wrongdoing. This show has only the most tangential connection to the original series. For legal reasons they had to give Dean Hargrove “based on the Matlock series”; credit.. To be hired by a New York law firm, Matlock would have had to verify her law license status through one of three official mechanisms, each carefully managed by the state. Identity, address, current license status, disciplinary actions, etc.

A remake of Matlock (1986). As soon as I saw that Kathy Bates was going to star in the Matlock reboot, I texted my mom asking if it would be something we could watch together. We live in different states but occasionally watch shows together. And I think this would be a great choice. I love the idea of an older woman returning to the working world.
Especially a 70-year-old woman!
Let me be clear. I’m not a fan of legit shows, and while I’m sure that in the 54 years before DVRS, when I was sometimes held captive by viewers of shows we’d rather not watch, I did happen to, by accident. an original Matlock episode or two. But I was definitely not a fan of the show. That said, I jumped in because everything I watched with Kathy Bates, *Misery*, *Primary Colors*, *Dolores Claiborne*, etc., etc., etc., was great.
I watched the pilot and loved everything about it
So I was counting on *Matlock* to be just as great, or Kathy Bates not involved. Not having watched the original *Matlock*, I had nothing to compare it to. I watched legal shows and police procedurals that went so fast and were so complicated that I got lost. But *Matlock* is easy and I was right at every turn. Thankfully, none of the characters are annoying or extremely unpleasant.

As other reviewers have said, there’s a surprise at the end that we can’t talk about, but clues are dropped all the time. If I were to compare the series to another show, I would say that' it’s like *Columbus*. There are times when "Matty" she struggles with the changing times, she hasn’t practiced law in many years, and then there are times when she seems to be confused for a person to walk into a trap.
