Affiliate marketing offers countless opportunities to make money online. In addition to flexibility and low risk, this online business model requires low prior costs.
Affiliate marketing involves promoting other people’s products or services in exchange for a commission on each sale. You may have seen headlines marked “affiliate” or “advertising post” on many of the websites you visit, or maybe you have already signed up for an affiliate link.
Affiliate marketing is an outstanding way for bloggers and other content creators to make money through their audience. As a content creator, if you have a good audience, you could simply monetize them by selling other people’s products or services to them, and getting your commissions in return. For ex their audience.
For example, I might just decide to partner with any e-commerce platform or any company that sells products or services. All I have to do, is to promote their products/services to my audience, then whenever my audience makes any purchase through me, the company pays me a commission depending on the amount of purchase made.
All affiliate marketers must do is find a product they like, promote it, and get a percentage of the profit from every sale they make. Affiliate links track sales.
How Does Affiliate Marketing Work?

In affiliate marketing, there are 3 parties that exist:
- The company/brand
- The affiliate and
- The buyers.
The company/brand is the owner of the product/service that is being promoted; the affiliate is the person that is promoting the product/service; while the buyer is the one that purchases the product/service being promoted by the affiliate.
So, what happens here is that an affiliate would have to find and reach out to a brand/company of interest, to partner with them as an affiliate. In some cases, it is the company that may reach out to an affiliate, for partnership. But this happens only when you as an affiliate, has a huge audience with high purchasing ability. A company cannot just reach out to you for partnership if you don’t have an audience.
In either case, the affiliate would require to sign up on the company’s website, as an affiliate. This generates a unique affiliate link or promo code for the affiliate. This is the link or code that the affiliate will use to promote the given product.
While promoting the product, the affiliate will now need to share the affiliate link or promo code to their audience. Then whenever a buy purchases the product through the affiliate link or promo code, the affiliate gets the required commission credited in their wallet. The affiliate can now decide whether to withdraw the commission as cash or use it in any other available form.
Each affiliate company has a certain affiliate commission they pay. For example: if an affiliate company is paying 30% commission for a product of $500. Then if you as an affiliate sells one of that product through your affiliate link or promo code, 20% of $500 will be deposited in your affiliate wallet. 20% of $500 is a whopping sum of $100, just for selling one product. Then imagine if you are able to sell up to 10 of that product in a month, that would be giving you up to $1,000 in a month.
Mind you, it is not only one affiliate company or product that you can promote at a time, you can promote as many affiliate products as you can. All you have to do, is to always look out for legit and reliable products that would be of value to your audience. Imagine promoting up to 10 different products and making at least 5 to10 sales of each products in a month. That’s really a lot of money.
How To Start Affiliate Marketing

Here are the basic steps you need to get started on your affiliate marketing journey:
Step #1: Choose Your Niche
Your niche is simply the field you want to go into. If you are a blogger, video content creator, social media influencer, you may need to define your niche, because your niche determines the kind of audience you will have. For example: if you create a social media page and start teaching people about health, posting informative videos about health regularly, people interested in their health will definitely be the ones that will be following your page. So, your niche here is Health, and when you want to promote affiliate product to your audience, you will definitely have to look out for health products to promote. Because that’s the kind of product that will sell very well on your page, since your page talks about health.
You cannot be talking about health on your page and be promoting fashion products. Though you can still do that, you can still product other products that are not in your niche, but the best is always to promote products in your niche. This is because your audience have known you as an authority/expert in that niche of yours, and can easily buy products in your niche that you promote. According to Investopedia, you’re likely to make more money with affiliate marketing content that is similar to your niche.
The best idea in choosing your niche, is to go for the field that you have passion for or the field you know very well. But it is also important to check if that field has purchasing power. In affiliate marketing, there are fields that you can easily see affiliate products to promote, while there are fields that you will find it hard to see affiliate products to promote.
Step #2: Start Building Your Audience

In affiliate marketing, the major key to success, is having a good audience. A good audience I meant here is, having a huge audience that has a good purchase ability.
There are different ways to build an audience for yourself. It could be through a website/blogging, it could be through social media, and so on. In which ever way, the key is to provide value to your audience, and build a strong relationship and trust with them. Relationship and trust here is very important, because it is when you have a good rapport with your audience, and they trust you and the information you dish out to them, they will always feel safe to purchase any
Create High-Quality Content

Whether you are using a website or social media for your affiliate marketing, the key to growing a loyal audience is quality content.
If you are using a website/blog, then you may need to create a lot of content. Because the more content you create, the more traffic you are bound to get, which is the key to making better sales.
However, while ting your contents, you may need to always create contents that align with the products you are promoting. For example: if you want to promote an email marketing software, you may need to create contents about email marketing.
Also, if you are doing reviews, it will be nice to buy and try the product, so that you will be sure of your review about the product. This is because giving unreliable reviews about products/brands can make your audience lose trust in you. So, while doing any review, be sure that anything you say about the product /brand is all true.
Step #3. Choose an Affiliate Program

The next step is to decide which affiliate programs to join. It makes sense to choose an affiliate program or products that suits your niche.
There are two ways to find relevant affiliate programs in your niche: direct and through marketing. “Direct” means you are dealing directly with the company/brand that owns the affiliate products you want to promote. Some popular company that offer affiliate program and have high affiliate commission are: Shopify, Amazon, Canva, FreshBooks, etc.
There are millions of companies out there that have affiliate offers, all you have to do, is to find the ones in your niche and promote their products. If you already know the companies/brands in your niche that have affiliate programs, you can contact them directly and sign up for them. Signing up for an affiliate program is totally free most times.
Another way to join an affiliate program is through a marketplace where you can search for thousands of them and sign them up through the market.
An affiliate marketplace is a third party platform that mediate between the affiliates and companies/brand. In other words, they simply a “middle man” between affiliates and companies that own affiliate products. They help to bring together the two parties. When you visit an affiliate marketplace, you will see many companies offering affiliate program. All you have to do is to sign up on the mark place and select any affiliate company you want to promote their product.
In this, the market place has been paid on agreement, by the affiliate companies, to help promote their products. When you as an affiliate signs up on the market place and make any sale, the market place will be the one to pay you, your commission. Some of the popular affiliate market place are: Partnerstack, ShareASale, FlexOffers,
While both options are good, when choosing an affiliate program, you should consider its name, commission rate, and earnings per click (EPC). The program may have a low commission but a high EPC, which means it’s still worth joining.
Step #4: Start Promoting Your Affiliate Products

Now that you have enough audience and traffic, it’s time to start promoting your affiliate products to them. You can do this by attaching your affiliate link or promo code in your contents.
The content you are using to promote a particular affiliate product should align with the product you are promoting, and should be compelling enough. This is where copywriting comes in, you need to apply copywriting skills here, because for your audience to purchase your affiliate products, depends greatly on how compelling your content is.
However, never be tempted to provide false information about a product, just because you want to persuade your audience to buy it. When you do this, you may definitely lose your audience’s trust if they are disappointed with the product. So, in as much as it is important to make your content compelling, you still need to be real and truthful about a product you are promoting.
Step #5. Track Your Outcome
Proper tracking of affiliate links is necessary to build an outstanding revenue-generating strategy. You may need to track some details about which pages, links, and images that get the most traffic and conversions. This will help you to know where to make adjustments and where you focus more while promoting your affiliate products. There are marketing tools that can help you do this, some of them are: Refersion, Crewfire, Binom, etc.
Conclusion
Affiliate marketing is a great way to monetize your content and generate income online.
Affiliate marketing is evolving with time. Once upon a time, blogs and email lists were limited to accessing affiliate links, but now social networks generate high income by promoting products through affiliate networks.
